OLD CITY
The old town of Peshawar is a tangle of dusty alleys and picturesque shopping streets, where the incessant (and noisy!) ballet of vendors and passers-by, rickshaws, carts, motorcycles and cars fascinates as much as it exhausts. It is tempting to get lost in this labyrinth of life, and to let yourself be swept away by the sounds, the colours, the invitations of the merchants to share a cup of tea... Take the time to stroll! A word of advice: walk with your head up to admire the old two- or three-storey houses, which often have beautiful, finely carved wooden balconies. Take a break at the Khyber market (Khyber bazaar) to enjoy good skewers and grilled meats prepared by street cooks, and in one of the many chaikhana (tea room) for a cup of green (kahwa), black (chai-siyah) or milk (shire-chai) tea.
