Thatta's history has only been known for six centuries. Some historians believe that it is the ancient city of Pattal, where Alexander the Great left his troops to rest before returning in 325 BC. Thatta was the capital of Sindh from the 14th to the 18th century. It was then a rich and prosperous city, an important centre of trade, art and education. The Samma, Arghoun and Tarkhan dynasties made it their capital, then the Mughal emperors of Delhi ruled the city from the 16th century onwards. In 1739, the city was ceded to Shah Nadir of Iran and entered a period of decline.
