Genoese merchants founded a trading post at Tighina (Bendery) in the 12th century. In 1408 Alexander I the Good granted the merchants of Lvov commercial privileges. The fortress developed under Ștefan cel Mare then Petru Rareș. In 1538, the city and its fortress were taken by Suleiman the Magnificent. The King of Sweden Charles XII resided there after his defeat at Poltava in 1709. The fortress was home to the 14th Russian army. Tighina has two old churches and a history museum. The Charles XII Museum can be found in the neighbouring village Varnița. Varnița is also well known for its mineral water spring with healing properties.
