A little more than 110 km east of Austin lies Eureka, nestled at an altitude of nearly 1,980 m (5,000 ft) at the foot of Richmond Mountain. In the 19th century, it was the second largest mineral-producing town in the region, so its development, like Austin's, was based on silver. Today, it is one of the best preserved former mining towns in the American West. Dating back to 1870, its red brick buildings can be seen during a quick drive down Highway 50. On the practical side, this village of several hundred inhabitants has a few lodging and restaurant possibilities.
