Possenhofen Castle on the shores of the tranquil Lake Starnberg was the birthplace of Elisabeth, the future Empress of Austria.
The castle is steeped in history as it was here, on the shores of Lake Starnberg, that the famous Austrian Empress Sissi, immortalized by Romy Schneider, grew up. The beautiful Bavarian woman was both a cousin and a friend of King Ludwig II. Like her father, the young girl loved nature and spent her time running in the woods around the castle, hunting and swimming in the lake. Even after she became Empress of Austria, she returned many times to the castle of her childhood. The park was designed by the architect Peter Joseph Lenné.
