The Queima das Fitas (Burning of the Ribbons) festival was born around 1920, when the graduating students symbolically gave their academic records to their fellow students who had just started their final year. Over the years, the festival, which is also celebrated in other university cities (notably Coimbra), has evolved and nowadays the entire university community and its entourage participate. The programme each year includes several concerts, a student procession in the city, screenings and other activities during a week.
