MAYFLOWER II
Life-size replica of the ship that brought the first pilgrims from England to the East Coast of the United States
Here is a life-size replica of the ship that took the first pilgrims from England to the east coast of the United States and finally settled in the city of Plymouth. In 1620, 102 men, women and children disembarked in the New World after 65 days of travel aboard the Mayflower. The ship's passengers are considered the fathers of the nation because they were one of the very first waves of immigration to the New World, and because they were the originators of the country's first permanent settlement.
This 27-metre-long boat leaves the English city of Plymouth, which gave its name to the colony, in September 1620, carrying the Pilgrim Fathers, 35 very pious Protestants fleeing England and its persecutions, and other Europeans in search of a place to practice their religion freely.
One of the highlights of the crossing is the signing of the Mayflower Compact. Drawn up by the Pilgrim Fathers, this pact indicates that new rules, specific to the new colony, will be put in place. Signed by nearly half of the settlers, this document is widely regarded as the basis of the United States Constitution.
After a three-year refurbishment in Mystic, Connecticut, the Mayflower II makes its grand return to Plymouth in 2020 and will once again be able to welcome visitors on board. Aboard the replica Mayflower, disguised guides greet visitors and tell them the story of this historic expedition.
