Giant Lauterbach on Route 66 holding an American flag
Lauterbach Giant is the last of the three Illinois Muffler Men on Route 66 (the others being Gemini Giant in Wilmington and Bunyon's Giant in Atlanta). He stands at the entrance to Lauterbach's Tire & Auto Service, holding an American flag in his hands. Decapitated by a tornado in 2006, he was restored to health with a few bolts screwed into his chest. Route 66 is not really glamorous at this place with the very heavy traffic and one hesitates to stop there for the photograph. Without doubt the places were greener in the past.
