The lake is considered an ecological disaster, as evidenced by the dead fish and birds lining its shores at certain times of the year, killed in part by its excessively high salinity level. Formed in 1905 following an engineer's error in diverting a river, the water was initially clear and pure. In the 1950s, real estate investors began transforming it into a seaside resort for the wealthy classes: Salton Sea was to become Hollywood's place to relax. But a flood, a hurricane and a few years later, the site offers a landscape of apocalypse, rarely seen.
