Archaeological site containing the remains of a volcanic stone fortress and the traces of a sanctuary.
Filakopi is the most important archaeological site in Milos. Here we discover the traces of a prehistoric city that was founded in the ancient Bronze Age, around 3000 BC and lasted until about 1100 BC. A major cultural and commercial centre, the art of ceramics developed largely there: the famous statue of the Kyra of Filakopi is on display at the Archaeological Museum in Plaka. Today, the city is overwhelmingly engulfed, but the remains of the formidable volcanic stone fortress and the traces of a sanctuary can still be seen.
