Jean-François Millet was born in Gréville, a local pride and joy known the world over. The painter, who sublimated the reality of rural life, is honoured in a variety of ways. In an original museography, visitors can see, for example, farm implements and reproductions of works depicting them. At the same time, there are a number of events on offer: guided walks and shows punctuate the year in these splendid surroundings.

LA HAGUE, A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR THE PAINTER OF RURAL REALITIES
Jean-François Millet was born in the hamlet of Gruchy, in Gréville-Hague, Manche, on October 4, 1814, into a pious and relatively well-off peasant family.
As a child, he took part in farm life and helped out in the fields. After moving to Barbizon in 1849, Jean-François Millet only returned to his native village on rare occasions, but his work bears witness to the deep imprint Gruchy and the Hague left on his palette.
The site offers a tour combining original works, everyday objects, farming tools and audiovisual presentations on the life and work of the Norman painter.
From the common room evoking Jean-François Millet's childhood, to the landscapes, farm work and domestic chores, explore the major events and artistic life that marked the 19th century.
Finally, relive the incredible story of the artist's most famous painting, L'Angélus, by discovering the collection of "unusual and decorative" objects.

Beau village musée super
The exposition is done with much love and care, the girl at the entrance is delightful and goes out of her way with information and guidance. The village around is dreamlike charming…. The only thing to improve are the English subtitles to a little video - they are incomplete and inadequate. And it would be great to translate other texts into English as well, so more people can enjoy they visit to this little jewel…
