South of Khartoum and Gezira, Kosti is a crossroads city. In the west, it is Kordofan, El Obeid and the Darfur road that opens. To the east you win Sennar and Ethiopia. To the south, you touch the Nuba Mountains by crossing the river up to the upper Nile and, by extension, to southern Sudan. Kosti was founded in the th century by an Orthodox merchant, which explains the presence in the city of a church dedicated to this cult. The premises gently (and ironically) called their town Kosta Rica. Surrounded by farmland, Kosti is located on the west bank of the White Nile. In front of it is Rabak, the twin town, connected by a bridge, which houses one of the largest Sudanese companies specialized in the production, refining and export of sugar: Kenana Sugar Company (KSC), the city's first employer. It dates from the Nimeiry period. If you are not only interested in the Egypt-Ethiopia route during your stay in Sudan, you have a good chance of going to Kosti. Apart from its natural site more green than the arid Khartoum, the city itself offers little distractions. A little to the north, the Island of Aba, the stronghold of the mahdisme, can offer interesting lighting over this momentous period in Sudan's history. If not, you can stroll through the port and dream of the southern route…
