KASBAH AGHENAJ
In the historic heart of Tiznit, the citadel known as Kasbah Aghenaj was built in 1810 to house a war arsenal to reinforce the positions of Sultans Moulay Slimane and Moulay Abderahman, in the face of colonial attempts from the southern ports and the Kingdom of Tazerwalt.
Although nothing remains of the inner fortress, which was undoubtedly dismantled in the 1940s, this Alawite Kasbah of vast proportions boasts a magnificently constructed south bastion, with groin and barrel vaults. The interior of the bastion features a vaulted structure built on oblong stones. The only doorway still intact shows a certain degree of elaboration, and unlike the other borjs, required master stonemasons. A fairly elaborate military monument, the Kasbah's southern bastion features a chicane-shaped opening, which can be explained by the fact that this fortified building predates the city walls. The doorway is protected by a carved stone cornice with fluted mouldings. The square pilasters feature simple capitals, while the keystone features the same curved moldings as the cornice. We shouldn't be surprised by this highly stylized doorway: it's also used for notables' residences in the town, a tradition that other towns in the Kingdom also readily borrow. Ashlar is also used for some of the arches in religious buildings and for the rear gates of the city walls.
