MONASTÈRE DE TOUMLILINE
Perched on a promontory in the heart of the cedar forest, the Toumliline monastery offers a panoramic view over the valley. Founded in 1952 by Benedictine monks, it embodies the desire of Pope Pius XII and King Mohamed V to work together to bring Islam and Christianity closer together. In this sense, the Toumliline chapel is the only Christian building in Morocco where the Cherifian star is represented. In 1955, after the French army closed the Muslim vacation camps run by the nationalist movement, the organizers asked the monks for hospitality. Young Catholics and Muslim students organized tournaments, debates and musical evenings together, getting to know each other. This episode inspired the creation of the "Rencontres Internationales de Toumliline", summer meetings for reflection and debate on social issues. Politicians, intellectuals, religious figures, engineers and people from all walks of life took part in these meetings, which lasted until 1967. The expression "Spirit of Toumliline" recalls these moments of dialogue, peace and sharing between the different communities. Closed since 1968, the monastery is at the heart of a rehabilitation project led by the Fondation Mémoires Pour l'Avenir. The first stage was completed in 2024 with the restoration of the chapel, the reopening of the library, the revival of the Rencontres Internationales and the creation of a spiritual hiking itinerary in the Middle Atlas.
