DEFTERDAR MOSQUE
The mosque (Xhamia e Teftedarit, Džamija Defterdar) was built in 1570, burned down in 1999 and renovated in 2010. It is named after Haxhi Mehmet Efendi, who was a defterdar (great Ottoman officer in charge of the budget) and who financed its construction. The building, square and without much charm, has lost its precious woodwork. In the courtyard, 17th-century tombstones have escaped the destructive madness of Serbian nationalists and Islamic fundamentalists. They are decorated with calligraphy (verses from the Koran) and plant motifs.
