FORTRESS OF DIANA

Located at Karatas, 9 km upstream from Kladovo, the fortress of Diana is representative of the advanced posts on the limes built by the Romans. Built by Trajan in the 2nd century, Diana is the largest stronghold built by the Romans in Upper Mesa. Its strategic position on a bend of the Danube gave it the defensive role that every Roman stronghold had. This site, with its red tile and stone buildings, gives us an idea of the importance of this region for the Romans at the time.
