With a population of over 7,000, Shakawe is the major center of the Panhandle and is slowly developing as such. Stores are expanding and infrastructure is multiplying, there is even a Choppies supermarket. This is a clear sign of the growth of tourism in this area. The village is one of the bases of the famous Kuru Family dedicated to the defense and development of the many San communities in the region. Shakawe is of limited tourist interest to travelers, but the surrounding camps are highly recommended, as are excursions to the Tsodilo Hills, some 40 km away.
