Adjacent to the town of Mahendranagar and the Indian border, Sukla Phanta National Park covers 305 km2 of sal and phanta forests along the banks of the Bahini River. Created as a hunting reserve in 1979, today it is undoubtedly one of the country's wildest parks. Its distinctive feature is the vast expanse of savannah (phanta) that gives the reserve its name. Lake Rani Tal, with its bird observatory, is a favorite spot for birdwatchers. It is famous for its large population of barasingha, a species of deer endemic to the region. Entry costs Rs. 1,500 per person per day, guide compulsory.
