Sonauli is the town at the busiest border crossing between India and Nepal. Located 120 km from Bharatpur (Chitwan National Park), it's a 4-hour drive by bus or car. The village is of little interest, consisting of a row of modest hotels. From morning to night, however, there's a hustle and bustle typical of frontier towns. Don't forget that to cross over to the other side, you'll need to apply for an Indian visa in advance, either in France or at the Indian embassy in Kathmandu. You'll come across a lot of Buddhists here, as this is the closest border crossing to Lumbini, a major place of pilgrimage to the birthplace of Buddha.
