The town was named after gold prospector Frank Watson of Edmonton, Alberta, who settled here to make his fortune. Ten kilometers from the southern border, the former fishing operation expanded with the construction of the Alaska Highway at kilometer 1019, making it the third largest community in the Yukon. These famous signposts, the first of which was planted by a GI in 1942, tell travelers how many miles they are from other cities in the world (taking a picture of yourself at this location remains a time-honored tradition). For those who love the Northern Lights, the Northern Lights Centre is a must-see attraction.
