Placentia (Plaisance) has a rich history and was chosen by the Basque fishing colonies for its well-protected harbour and pebble-covered beach, which facilitated the drying of fish. Interesting fact: when the settlers arrived, and for 50 years, Plaisance was the French capital of Newfoundland, while St. John's was the English capital. Located 100 km southwest of St. John's in a forested coastal area, Placentia continues to thrive today. While maintaining the charm of the area to attract business, it remains one of the most picturesque communities in the province.
