It is the western gateway to the Labrador region, where Route 389 in Quebec becomes Route 500, and is thesecond most populous town in Labrador after Goose Bay. Consequently, it offers many services such as lodging, restaurants, stores, etc., and is served by the Wabush airport. It is home to the largest open pit iron mine and iron ore pellet plant on the continent, the Iron Ore Company of Canada, now part of Rio Tinto Mines. The city's motto is Kamistiatusset, a Naskapi word meaning "the land of the hardworking".
