A live tiger for a mascot on LSU's varsity team in Baton Rouge.
There is a rather strange tradition in LSU's varsity team of having a live tiger as a mascot. The tradition dates back to 1934 when several LSU coaches and athletic directors took the unusual step of bringing a young tiger from the Little Rock Zoo. Since then, there have been several generations of furry mascots at LSU, eventually nicknamed Mike after Chellis "Mike" Chambers, one of the former coaches who initiated the project.
