PARQUE MALDONADO

The Parque Maldonado is a pretty garden with beautiful trees and flowers, and buildings that bear witness to the rather massive architecture of the 19th century, notably the Municipio de Riobamba. The cathedral of Riobamba dominates the north side of the garden. In the heart of the garden, note the statue erected in honour of the astronomer and geographer Pedro Vicente Maldonado, who was born in Riobamba in the early 18th century. He participated in the French geodetic mission to measure the length of one degree of a meridian arc near the equator.
