LA PIEDRA DE LOS DOS COMPADRES
Located about 3 km from Esquipulas, on the ancient road connecting the city in Chiquimula, Los de los dos compadres (the stone of friends) consists of two huge stones installed in a delicate balance one on the other. The whole measure is nearly four metres high, and it is estimated that each stone weighs approximately 50 tonnes. Legend tells us that these two stones were, before they were changed into blocks, two friends cheminant on the road to Esquipulas, carrying a child to baptize him. Tired, they chose to rest at this beloved place of the gods. But there, disturbed by the beauty of the places, they abandoned the sins of the flesh. The sin consumed, they were instantly transformed into stone. The custom is that visitors who come to Esquipulas for the first time go to the premises to offer candles in offering, to burn incense or pom (sort of incense in dough) or to dance around stones. It is a place where the inhabitants of Chiquimula and Esquipulas enjoy coming pique.
