Church built in 1547, one of the oldest in Guatemala, with statues of saints and a representation of the Mayan god of fertility.

This church built in 1547 is one of the oldest in Guatemala. Inside, statues of saints are arranged along the walls. The representation of the Mayan god of fertility and that of a quetzal, immersed in the reading of a book that a haloed angel holds open for him, symbolize the religious syncretism of the country. Another notable element is the commemorative plaque in honor of Stanley Rother, a Santiago priest and defender of indigenous rights, who was assassinated in 1981.

superbe église
Sur le chemin de visite des villages typiques du lac Atitlan, au village de Santiago cette église sera vous ravir, en effet avec un fronton très typique époque coloniale espagnole, le jardin tranche avec la blancheur des façades de l'église, c'est du plus bel effet. ne manquez pas de visiter l'intérieur de l'église avec tous ces autels mayas, c'est curieux et très photogénique.
