With about 60,000 inhabitants, Tefé is a large town on the Amazon River (here Solimões) between Manaus (510 km to the east) and the borders of Peru and Colombia. Fishing and wood exploitation are its main resources. At the confluence of the Rio Japurá and the Rio Solimões, and slightly downstream of important tributaries of the Solimões, it enjoys a strategic location for trafficking, especially of drugs. It is more of a town than a city, with dirt streets and dull houses. You may have to spend some time there, on your way to or from the nearby Mamirauá reserve (a few km away).
