Six hours by boat from Santarém, there are sulphurous waters at 40°C and caves where, in the 1990s, cave paintings and pottery were discovered. Dating from 7,000 to 15,000 B.C., these prehistoric remains have challenged the previously accepted idea that the Amazon was populated by Indians who came down from the Andes much later.
