ANGKOR NATIONAL MUSEUM
A museum displaying some of the finest sculptures from the Angkor site, the 8 galleries and their exhibits retrace the history of Cambodia
This superb museum showcases some of the finest sculptures from the Angkor site (some 140,000 pieces in stock!), which you won't see when you visit the temples. The exhibits are organized in eight galleries, with a pedagogical approach that helps visitors better understand the history of Cambodia and its temples, and the evolution of artistic style over the centuries. The central Hall of a Thousand Buddhas is, of all the galleries, the one that immediately catches the visitor's eye: the walls are hollowed out with a multitude of niches in which we can observe all the possible postures of the Enlightened One, through the ages and aesthetic influences. The chronology of Khmer history unfolds from room to room, punctuated by representations of the original religion, Hinduism, whose original characteristics were quickly adapted and even transformed by local artists. A highly didactic visit (in addition to the Khmer language, all the panels are in perfect French, approved by the École Française d'Extrême-Orient and the Angkor Conservation Authority) and a real key to admiring the enchanting ruins that dot the immense tropical plain. Perfect for learning about the history of Angkor before visiting the temples, and for understanding the historical and cultural context before immersing yourself in the observation of the ancient stones. It's also an interesting break if you're tired of going from temple to temple and want to take advantage of the air-conditioning.
