POPOVERS ON THE SQUARE

World cuisine restaurant
5/5
1 review

This charming café is the ideal place to stop for brunch or lunch. Housed in a handsome brick building, it's right in the heart of Portsmouth's historic Market Square. You'll find good salads, sandwiches and delicious popovers. The European pastries, perhaps a little less refined than in France, make passers-by salivate, and the café is worthy of an Italian one. In summer, the vast terrace is very pleasant and allows for discreet people-watching. A good address.

RIVER HOUSE RESTAURANT

River House is one of Portsmouth's fine restaurants. Situated on the harbor, overlooking the bay, it ensures a pleasant dinner. The menu offers a typical New England selection: lots of fish and shellfish, chowder, lobster rolls, salads - not bad for lunch. The dining room is a little dark, with its brick and wood interior, but not unpleasant. Weather permitting, ask for a table outside, where you can enjoy the terrace above the water and watch the sailboats go by.

Here's an address that's out of the ordinary and wakes up our taste buds! If you've already eaten your weight in lobster rolls and seafood, Moxy will offer you some welcome novelty. This tapas bar, New England version, offers a varied and surprising menu: mozzarella accompanied by sunflower seeds, roasted artichoke, fried clams, pork with flat beans, baked fish... The list of proposals is long and tasty, without forgetting that it changes regularly according to the seasons. The atmosphere is modern and trendy.

LA MAISON NAVARRE

Bistronomy €€

Lemon meringue pie, Paris-Brest, chocolate éclairs... You're in the temple of French pastry! Croissants and pains au chocolats also feature prominently. And that's not counting the famous jambon-beurre, divinely good. La Maison Navarre is the brainchild of two Frenchmen, Charlotte and Victor, who had the bright idea of adding a bistro to their establishment, with a fine selection of wines, cheeses and charcuterie on the menu, as well as a few "local" recipes (coq au vin, escargots de Bourgogne, etc.).

An upscale steakhouse in an unusual location. Set in the grand and historic Rockingham House, just a stone's throw from central Portsmouth, the Library Restaurant is well worth the experience.
