" Gaol "comes from the former English and pronounces prison (djayl). It is therefore the former prison in Nantucket, as the lourds in the windows testify. Opened in 1806 to replace the former prison, its structure in solid oak is reinforced by heavy nuts and thick bars in iron, so as to make attempts to escape. However, the records of the prison attest to successful attempts, such as this 15-year-old boy who took the heels from the fire of the chimney.
