BALTIMORE BASILICA

She was the first United States cathedral, built between 1806 and 1821 by John Carroll (later Archbishop of the city) and Benjamin Latrobe. After the adoption of the Constitution, the church men wanted to build a cathedral to celebrate the right to celebrate their worship regularly (being only a persecuted minority). They wanted to make it an American architectural symbol, different from Gothic monuments in Europe.
