This listed house is both a museum and the headquarters of the famous Society of the Cincinnati, the oldest patriotic society in the United States founded by Henry Knox in 1783 and whose first president was George Washington. Its original members were selected for their actions or ideas that contributed to the independence of the United States during and after the war against the British Crown. Due to the important contribution of the French army during the War of Independence, the Society has a branch in France, and Louis XVI was one of the first members. It operates on a hereditary basis and its current members, in the United States and France, are descendants of the first members (with the exception of a few notable personalities who have joined its ranks over the years). Women are not admitted to the Society of Cincinnati. The residence, which has been his headquarters since 1937, was built between 1902 and 1905 by Larz Anderson, an American diplomat and philanthropist who was a member of the Society for over 40 years. Before giving it up, Anderson and his wife lived there for more than thirty years, receiving and entertaining the political and social elite of the time.
