Site became National Historic Landmark in 1973 and proclaimed National Monument in 2000. In Gothic style, this cottage is part of a set of buildings serving a rest house for American veterans since 1851. If President James Buchanan was the first to use it as a temporary residence during his tenure, it was Lincoln who spent the most time in cottage, almost a quarter of his presidency in total and in particular the summer, when the suffocating heat of downtown Washington l. The guided tour is interactive and allows you to learn more about the man and his ideas, which have shaped an extraordinary presidency.
