Yellowstone (yellow stone) comes from the yellow color of the big canyon cliffs. This particular color is due to the hydrothermal alte of iron contained in the stones. Activothermal activity (hot springs, geysers, mud volcanoes, fumerolles) contributes to the world's renown. Ge practitioners, volcanologists and other scientists keep a watchful eye on these unusual and spectacular pits. An average of 2,000 seismic tremors are recorded each year, with the unintentionally low to be felt by visitors. Created in 1872 by President Ulysses S. Grant, Yellowstone is not only the country's first national park but also the oldest in the world. This vast space of nearly 900,000 hectares is inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage Site. Although mostly located in Wyoming, it also extends to a small part of Idaho and overgoes, to a lesser extent, Montana.GeologySome key dates on site training: There is a sea of -600 million to -75 million Anne. For 20 million Anne's, the Rocky Mountains and violent volcanic activity are seen. From -55 million to -40 million, the lava covers the reel. From -40 million to -2 million Anne's, several climate changes are drying up and re-heating the reel. From -2 million Anne to -600,000 years, several volcanic explosions suck up and recreate a gigantic caldera, the largest volcanic system of Ame's North. From 600,000 years to the present, several glaciations suck. The current landscape was mooted by the last glaciation that ended 8,500 years ago.HistoryHuman pretense in Yellowstone dates from at least 11,000 years. Obsidian deposits were used by the AME in the manufacture of sharp tools and weapons. In the Mississippi valle, there were a lot of cuts in this stone, which means that there was trade between the tribes. In 1803, Louisiana was sold to the United States by Napole 'on. Immediately in the case, the pre-sident Jefferson rushed to send a mission to recognize the country and annexed the Northwest Territories. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark then took the Pacific route with a handful of men. The road lasted more than two years. We are in 1806. To the great surprise of all, John Colter, a member of the exp, of teacher to stay in the west to hunt the beaver. He was probably the first white man in Yellowstone. His first crossing was carried out at Tower Falls, or the trapper observed the phe-othermal. It came back with fabulous stories about this country of fire and sulfur, but the then-Rickers of the time are in the descriptions of Colter the elusions of a spirit by too long loneliness. During the ensuing forty-first decades, many trappers evoke the boiling waters, geysers and trees, without finding a lot of their listeners. In 1857, this trapper, Jim Bridger, in exp in the same re-enactment, also spoke of welling water, mountain ice and yellow stones. Maligning, the explorer and the beacon Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden were reborn at his re-election two years later, he went to an exp to study Upper Missouri. Bridger served them as a guide, but heavy snowfalls were toned down by the group to approach Yellowstone. The War of Divestiture interrupted the search for a good one. It had to wait until 1870, including the return of an arms exploration mission from Yellowstone with a pre-cis survey. It was re-established to convince a majorities of the Congregation that the wilderness she had just traveled was invaluable tourist potential. In 1871, the government funded an even larger exp, which returned with a full and illustrious report. A year later, on March 1, 1872, the pre-challenger Ulysses Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park, the first national park of the United States and the world. (however, it will be 1894 for an act to prop up the animals of the park). The first tourists were not expected to wait, me if their diligence could be attacked on the roads of the park. Ten years later, the conditions of the curse began, the visitors rounded up by thousands to the railway.ClimateYellowstone has a mountain climate with beautiful summer weather, but temperatures that quickly crash once the sun is sunk. Winters are rough and snowy and the park is not fully accessible during this season. As for spring and autumn, weather is rather unstable and can bring rain as snow. Check the opening of roads that can be closed in case of heavy snow.NatureThe park, which is the second largest natural park in the United States, would concentrate two thirds of the world's geothermal phenomena. Phenomena caused by caldera, sleeping volcano, taking the form of a huge circular depression resulting from an eruption from the magmatic chamber. Among the most famous phenomena, the multicolor pool of Grand Prismatic Spring and the geyser of Old Poli. The park is also renowned for its wildlife. Since 1976 it has been listed as UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1976. Among other things, it contains many mammals such as coyote, deer, elk, but also species that have now disappeared from more southern areas such as wolves or grizzly bears.Know that the park is not open to the totalite nature of its surface and that some parts, particularly in the country of the country, are as wild as in the time of its covered: We must therefore remain vigilant in its exploration and respect the re-ignites of the curves of the park. In 2016, a 23-year-old male approached too much of a hot water source, and since 1870, no fewer than 22 people found death in Yellowstone Park. Let us not forget 1988 and its apocalypse colors. For three months, from late June to mid-September, one third of the Yellowstone Park (200,000 ha) was large-scale fire. Attracted by a fierce wind and maintained by a whirlwind, as the US had not known from the point of origin of the foundation, the homes that would have died from themselves quickly spread to various points in the park. Only the first snow, followed by rains, gradually extinguished all homes. More than half a century ago, the park, environmentalists and biologists agreed that this fire was "in a forest renewal process". the fire would have "cleansed" the park, favoring the re-occurrence of the eco-system. In order to prevent this disaster from happening again, there are firebreaks. The disaster had serious economic connotations: $ 190 billion in order to avoid without succumbing to the fact that it does not spread and a reduction of 50% in the death penalty.

What to visit Yellowstone National Park?

When to go to Yellowstone National Park?

When to go to Yellowstone National Park? Summer, which begins with Memorial Day (last Monday in May) and ends with LaborDay(first Monday in September) in the U.S., is the vacation season. Prices go up and crowds flock. However, Yellowstone National Park can be "visited" year-round, so many attractions and opportunities are available. The white blanket that covers the park in winter allows for winter sports (cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling...). However, the Grand Loop Road is snowed in and the park is only accessible with specialized vehicles (some roads are even completely closed). In summer, the whole park is accessible, but of course, there are more visitors. However, the park guarantees stable weather, which is not the case in autumn and spring.

Weather all year round

Yellowstone has a mountain climate with beautiful days in summer but temperatures that drop quickly once the sun sets. Winters are harsh and snowy and the park is not fully accessible during this season. As for spring and fall, the weather is rather unstable and can bring rain as well as snow. Check the opening of roads that may be closed in the event of heavy snowfall.

Budget

In a country where the currency is of course the US$, a stay in Yellowstone National Park can be very expensive. Any activity (hike, visit...) will cost you a pretty penny. The same is true for lodging and food. Hoteliers, restaurateurs and tourism professionals take advantage of the high demand (especially in the summer) and "captive" visitors. So if you want to save money, opt for hostels, campgrounds and fast food.

Procedures

You need a biometric passport to go to the United States. This passport qualifies for the Visa Waiver Program for stays of less than 90 days. To do so, you will have to fill in the ESTA form online at https: //en.usembassy.gov/en/ and pay the administrative fees. Be careful to fill in the form at least 72 hours before and only through the above-mentioned site. Many fraudulent sites offer to take care of this administrative process at exorbitant costs. All you need to enter Alaska is a valid biometric machine-readable passport and a non-refundable round-trip ticket to the United States and no intention of extending your stay.

Health

No particular precautions to take: in the United States, the mandatory vaccines are the same as in Europe or Canada and no one will ask you for them if you come from these countries. Almost everywhere in Yellowstone National Park, the water is drinkable. However, it may be a good idea to alternate between tap water and bottled mineral water.

Also, be sure to check your health insurance before you leave. Medical care in the U.S. is very expensive and free hospitals are overcrowded, with no guarantee of perfect care. In private hospitals, you will be taken care of on the condition that you provide proof of solvency.

How to go to Yellowstone National Park? Our advice & tips

There are many tour operators and agencies that offer tours of Yellowstone National Park and the Rocky Mountains, and there are many different options available: bus tours, independent self-guided tours, ranch stays, camping, sports trips, nature observation, and more. The possibilities are varied, but the budget will be substantial!

Visiting Yellowstone National Park on your own is very easy, as long as you are well organized. Remember to book airfare, car rentals, accommodations and activities (when possible) well in advance: it will save you money and make your trip less stressful. It is better to plan a tour than to return to the same accommodation every night. From Europe, it will take you about ten hours and at least 600 € to get to an airport (Jackson Hole in particular), which will then allow you to enter Yellowstone.

Within Yellowstone National Park, there are not many means of transportation and unless you travel in a group (i.e. by bus), you will need to rent a car and obtain an accurate map of the park. As big as Corsica, Yellowstone cannot be covered in a day and you will need to understand the estimated distances and travel times. In winter, snowmobile travel is possible.
