OUANALAOREEF
Gustavia, a town on the island of Saint-Barthélemy, is home to an exciting nature and environmental protection project called Ouanalaoreef. This association is involved in the ARTIREEF project, which aims to restore the Pointe Milou reef using the BIOROCK process. This process uses a low-intensity electric current to promote coral growth. Metal structures immersed in the water provide support for the corals, as well as offering refuge to numerous marine species. Corals that grow using this process are healthier, more resistant to climate change and have a much higher survival rate than natural corals. The ARTIREEF project also uses empty lambis shells, a fishing waste product, to create additional habitats for marine fauna. This initiative is helping to increase biodiversity and restore balance to the region's marine ecosystem.
