DUNTULM CASTLE
Now in ruins, this castle, located near the hamlet of Duntulm on the north coast of Trotternish, was built in the 14th and 15th centuries, when the region was subject to quarrels between the MacLeod and Macdonald clans. It was the MacDonalds who took control of the region and the fortress at the beginning of the 17th century. The site was abandoned around 1732, when Sir Alexander MacDonald built a new residence, the Monkstadt House, 8 km to the south, using a large part of the castle stones as building material. According to a local legend, the castle was abandoned after MacDonald's young son, who was placed under the care of a nanny, fell from a window and crashed into the rocks. As punishment, the nanny was placed in a boat that was allowed to drift across the North Atlantic.
