The city of Novorossiysk (250,000 inhabitants) is a former Turkish fortress that was renamed after it was taken by the Russians in 1838. Despite the strategic importance of its port (which was completely destroyed during the Second World War), Novorossiysk retains an undeniable southern charm in the summer: one can lie down with pleasure on its beaches, which are less crowded than those of the seaside resorts along the rest of the coast. Above all, you can't fail to visit its hinterland, which is in the midst of a wine-growing reconversion! In winter, the city is Olympian calm, perhaps even more charming: its deep aspect in the middle of high snow-covered mountains and its cargo ships slowly moving through the grey sea give it the air of a fjord.
