With its 270,000 inhabitants, Petrozavodsk stretches 25 km along the shore of Lake Onega. It's a great place to stroll, especially in summer, and is also a convenient base for exploring the region and its lakes. It is the main city of Karelia and you will find a pleasant, young and lively atmosphere here. Don't trust the etymology of its name (zavod means "factory")! The Scandinavian influence is felt in Petrozavodsk more than anywhere else: people ride their bikes a lot, the inhabitants are very committed to the protection of nature and the development of the Karelian heritage. The city is known to be, like the entire former Karelian Autonomous Republic, a stronghold of the anti-Putin opposition
