SAVIOR TRANSFIGURATION CATHEDRAL

Built in 1157 on the very spot where Alexander Nevsky was born, it is the very first stone religious building constructed in Northeast Russia. Until then, only wood was used and all churches tended to look the same. The cathedral has suffered throughout its history: it was looted five times by the Tatars (in 1238, 1252, 1281, 1382 and 1409), emptied of its treasures by a prince of Gorodets and burned by the Poles in 1611.
