SLEEPING CONVENT
Founded on the territory of the former Kremlin, the women's monastery of the Dormition occupied about two-thirds of the area of the buildings that Ivan the Terrible had built and had only eighteen nuns when it was founded in 1654 (a figure that would later rise to 200). Its 950 m long enclosure was embellished with four round towers, six to eight meters high. Along the north and east walls, the monastic cells date from the 17th century. According to a local legend, they preserve hidden treasures (dig at your own risk).
