A unique geological formation in the country, the Tottori sand dunes are the main attraction of the prefecture. To say that this is not expected in the archipelago is an understatement. This natural rarity has been possible for thousands of years thanks to the Sendai River's waves dredging volcanic sediments from Mount Daisen to the Sea of Japan. The currents and winds mixing with it allowed the Tottori dunes to take shape and become what they are today. This natural treasure is 16 km long and 2 km wide, and only 5 km from the town of Tottori. The height of the dunes varies according to many factors and can even approach 50 metres. It is fun to climb the highest of the dunes, nicely named uma no se, the horse's back, in order to enjoy this exceptional panorama as far as the eye can see. Some people climb it frontally, with great effort, others prefer to climb it from its sides, it's simpler. It's simpler. You feel quite small in the middle of this sandy desert facing the Sea of Japan. Be careful with the weather as well, summer can be hot and the winds can be quite violent on some days. It is possible to make a camel ride in the dunes, a relatively surprising attraction but which pleases the local tourists. You can clean your feet as you ride down the dunes near the car park. Several establishments offer souvenirs and fast food.
