Born in the Tsugaru region around 300 years ago, kogin-zashi is an embroidery art developed by peasant women to reinforce their hemp garments with cotton thread. Over time, this utilitarian skill evolved into a popular art form with refined geometric motifs. Three distinct styles have been passed down around Hirosaki. Today, kogin-zashi adorns accessories and everyday objects. This institute perpetuates this tradition, offering demonstrations and initiations in a listed building.
