HIROSAKI CASTLE
Built in 1611 by Lord Tsugaru Tamenobu, Hirosaki Castle is one of the few in Japan to have retained its original keep. It was the political center of the Hirosaki estate, ruled by the Tsugaru clan, a powerful feudal lord of the Edo period. Surrounded by moats, majestic gates and turrets dating back to the Edo period, it now forms the heart of a vast 49-hectare park, popular with locals and travellers alike. A true emblem of the city, it provides an exceptional backdrop for numerous events throughout the year. In spring, Hirosaki is transformed into one of the country's most famous cherry blossom sites, with some 2,600 trees and 52 different varieties. The sakura tunnel, the cherry trees illuminated at night, and the petals that cover the moat like a floating carpet attract over 2 million visitors every year. In autumn, the maples and chrysanthemums take over, in a profusion of colors sublimated by night-time lighting. In winter, the park is decked out in white, illuminated by snow lanterns, ephemeral sculptures and mini igloos created by local residents, to create a magical atmosphere. The park is also home to popular curiosities such as the "heart cherry tree", formed by the crossed branches of two trees, or an old cherry tree nicknamed "Nezuko" because its name is identical to that of a popular manga character (Demon Slayer). A must-see tour of the city.
