CHOSHO-JI TEMPLE
Founded in 1528, Chosho-ji temple was relocated in 1610 to accompany the construction of Hirosaki Castle. Spiritual center of the Soto Zen sect and family temple of the Tsugaru clan, it played a strategic role as a defensive rampart, with moats and earthen terraces protecting the town. Its vast main building, a rare surviving example of Hojo architecture, has been restored to its original style. The temple is also home to several historic buildings, including the Sanmon Gate, a jewel of the early Edo period, and the mausoleum of the Tsugaru lords.
