GOHYAKU RAKAN
3 km southwest of Tōno, near the small Unedori-jinja shrine dedicated to the divinity of weddings, are the five hundred disciples of Buddha (Gohyaku Rakan). These sculptures, dating from 1765, were carved into the rock by a monk to commemorate the martyrdom of the people who perished from famine in 1755, due to poor harvests. The monk wished to appease the souls of the deceased. Today, the place still exudes a very special atmosphere. The setting is magnificent, with moss covering the rock and lush natural surroundings.
