GASSAN (1984 M)

The Gassan-jinja shrine is located at the summit of Mount Gassan. It attracts many pilgrims, but is a little disappointing in itself, with the exception of the purification ritual you must undergo before entering. On the other hand, the walk to get there is magnificent! Shonai Kotsu runs four round-trip buses from Haguro-san on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from July to September (55 minutes). Alternatively, the Gassan-jinja shrine can be reached in two hours by bus from Tsuruoka station for ¥2,140.
