Dewa Sanzan (Three Dewa Mountains) is one of the most sacred mountains in Japan. It consists of three peaks, Haguro-san, Gassan ("Moon Mountain"), and Yudono-san, which are climbed year-round by white-clad pilgrims and yamabushi of the Shūgendō sect. The best time to visit Dewa Sanzan is from July to late September, when all three shrines are open. Dewa Sanzan can be explored in a day, provided you are an experienced climber and negotiate the bus schedules well. However, it is advisable to spend two days there in order to spend the night in a shukubō (an overnight stay with the monks).
