The area is very popular for its hikes, especially the one from Asahi-dake Onsen to Sōunkyō. From the resort it will take you 7-8 hours of walking to reach Mount Sōunkyō. From the Asahi-dake cable car, you will need to walk 2 hours to reach the crest of Asahi-dake volcano, and then 2 hours to pass Hokkai-dake mountain. You can then continue to Mount Kurodake Ishimuro (in 1 hour and 30 minutes) and then reach Mount Kuro-dake (in 30 minutes) which will take you to the top of the Sōunkyō resort lift. The area can be a bit crowded during the beautiful season in autumn, with the many tourists coming to admire the beautiful warm colored foliage.
