A municipality with a population of 340,000, Asahikawa is the second largest city in Hokkaidō. It developed mainly during the Meiji era and focused on its industrial development. While it is not a tourist destination in itself, it is the gateway to many destinations on the island, such as Wakkanai in the north or Daisetsuzan National Park. Asahikawa has the lowest temperature in Japan (-18°C in January and February). For this reason, it was the first ski resort created in Japan. Asahikawa is a very dynamic city, but it still keeps the traces of the Meiji era and its Ainu heritage.
